Harvey Pekar Talks Politics

Posted December 20, 2007 by BDP Staff

We can’t do a political show in Cleveland without stopping to talk to cartoonist Harvey Pekar. We loved talking with him. He even agreed to write a comic about Ohio, the election, and meeting with John. (click twice to enlarge)

The amazing artwork is by cartoonist Nick Bertozzi who is currently working with Harvey on a cartoon biography of Lenny Bruce.

  1. Great stuff. And I loved that the music into the Pekar segment was “Fire” from the Ohio Players…

  2. Great stuff indeed! Could your intrepid staff track down a exceedingly competent cartoonist in each city visited and have him/her come up w/their take on their city, the election, and their BDP tete-a-tete?

  3. I was excited to hear H. Pekar be included in the program and i sought out this page out and his comix (which is great, as usual). But what I want to comment on is the fact that you played down his opinion — which was the only voice of reason in the entire program! And you poo-pooed him by calling him a pessimist!! He’s a realist! He was stating it exactly how it is: average, non-thinking, scared people vote for safe politicians (read: liars, or worse, criminals with ulterior crazy agendas — um, like the current dolt with his rapture crap! peace in the middle east? please!)

So Harvey says: why would you want a bunch of average dumb dolts picking a dolt for president! And he’s right. And you present him as some eccentric, charming carmudgeon. Great.

I guess I should be grateful that you included him and his comix.

    – Olga in NYC, where I am surrounded by folks who agree with Harvey. Why doesn’t NY become the pivotal state? There are more thinking, progressive people here. Apparently the safemongers in Ohio haven’t gotten us very far, have they?

  4. ok, i’ve had a day to think about my above statements. I think Brooklyn should become the pivotal state.

  5. Harvey Pekar is not a cartoonist. He is a cartoon or comic WRITER. He collaborates with artists to create his comics. Writers of media shows commonly make the same mistake when writing about other famous comic collaboration teams (giving short shrift to the artists).

  6. Well, could it be that the great unwashed might actually disagree with Harvey and other ostensibly “progressive, thinking” ( huh?) people in legitimate ways?
I’m not defending the current crop of weasels, by any stretch, but I am defending against this vain presumption , as though it were anything more than wanting to have it your way. How “thinking” or “progressive” is that?
